We had a very good question from a reader today, to which I thought I knew the answer but realized I did not!
Dear Arizona Travel:
I will be traveling to the Grand Canyon West Rim with my pet puppy. Are pets allowed on the Grand Canyon Skywalk?
Thank you – Cozette

Hi, Cozette. Great question! In researching the answer, I found I could not find confirmation on the Destination Grand Canyon website nor the Grand Canyon Skywalk website regarding pets, but I believe that no pets are allowed ON the Skywalk itself. If the Grand Canyon West Rim rules are the same as the parts of the Grand Canyon that are within the National Park boundary, then pets are allowed – if kept on a leash at all times.
However, I’m 99% certain that pets are not allowed on the Skywalk itself. The operators of the Skywalk are very careful about keeping the glass walkway pristine of any scratches; they do not allow shoes, (shoe covers are provided and required) cameras or even wheelchairs, so one could safely assume that they would not allowed pets – neither walked nor carried.
Need a dogsitter while you enjoy the West Rim? We recommend treating your dog to a fun day at the Canyon Pet Resort in Flagstaff, Arizona. You can reach them at (928) 214-9324.
Enjoy your trip!

To bad about your no dog policy. I had planned to stop and walk it with my son and 2 show dogs after traveling for quite a few hours. Since the dogs won’t be allowed, there is no point in even stopping. We will find some place that is more pet friendly.
Hi, Sabrina – I’m sorry to hear how disappointed you sound. We are all dog-lovers here, too. The South Rim of the Grand Canyon, as an alternative, is pet-friendly as long as your dogs are kept on leashes at all times. The South Rim is the most popular tourist destination in the Grand Canyon, so I’m sure you and your son will love it.
I would like to visit the grand canyon and spend the night in a pet friendly hotel. I saw that you had a Canyon pet resort also. I don’t want to miss out on some sights becasue of my dog. How much will it cost me to leave my dog there? and are there hotels near by that will accept pets?
The Grand Canyon is pet friendly! The National Park allows dogs on leashes and yes, there are pet friendly hotels nearby. Try the Red Feather Lodge in Tusayan.
We are planning to take the train and stay overnight at the canyon. I am assuming dogs are not allowed on the train and was planning to leave him at the Canyon Pet Resort. Do you know anything about this place. Since i have to leave him overnight I would like a little more info. Thank you.
Joan, Canyon Pet Resort is indeed a great choice, but did you know that the Grand Canyon Railway also has a pet resort? Here is a link to their webpage: http://www.thetrain.com/pet-resort-6037.html. Because the Grand Canyon Railway and the hotels within Grand Canyon National Park (south rim) are both managed by Xanterra Hotels and Resorts, you may want to consider booking your pet resort stay, train tickets and overnight stay with them as a package; generally, you’ll see a savings as well as one-stop-shop convenience.
That was the one I was talking about. We are going in an RV, staying at their park then taking the train and an overnight at the canyon. I wondered if there was more information about the Pet Resort, i.e., if anyone had used it, had any comments, is there someone there overnight as I have to leave him overnight, etc. Thanks for your very quick response, I appreciate it.
I don’t have any personal experience, Joan, but I will open the question up to our blog readers and also our Facebook fans. Stay tuned here or to our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/ariztravel.
Sorry although I am on Facebook I am rather challenged and cannot find you looking for “ariztravel”. Can you be more specific. If I follow your link I just log in to my own page on facebook.
If you search ‘ariztravel’ on Facebook, the result you’re looking for says “Arizona Travel” and has the same profile picture as the beautiful shot of Sedona that we use here on our blog.
Another way to find our page is to simply click on that “Become a Fan” button over there on the right side of our blog…right over there ——->
I also commented on the Grand Canyon Railway’s Facebook fan page on your behalf. A search for Grand Canyon Railway on Facebook should also get you to the right place.
Hope that helps!
There is pet boarding available at both the Grand Canyon Railway in Williams and at the South Rim. Since pets are not allowed in the hotel rooms at either location, these fully-staffed kennels are a great option for those who prefer to travel with their pets.
If you would like more information on the kennels, the contact phone numbers are listed below.
Grand Canyon Railway Pet Resort: (800) THE-TRAIN (843-8724)
Grand Canyon South Rim: (928) 638-2631
Thank you for your interest in Xanterra Parks & Resorts!
I see that GCR replied (according to their facebook page) but I don’t see their reply anywhere.
Thanks, GCR! I’m sure Joan appreciates your reply. Great information for all our readers.
Hi, Joan. Spent some time up in Prescott yesterday and didn’t see this until today. You should now be able to see their comments here, too.
ARE PETS ALLOWED ON THE HOP ON TRANSPORTATION ? ARE THEY ALLOWED ANYWHERE NEAR THE SKYWALK ? WE WERE GOING TO COME THIS WEEKEND, BUT NOW IT LOOKS LIKE NOT.
According to the Hualapai website, “Pets are not permitted on tours or allowed to be left in parked cars. Pet accommodations are available at the Hualapai Ranch (fee applies). Service animals are permitted on tours.”
Just want to ask… My grandson and I are passing through Williams
and thought a short trip up to the south rim visitors center would be nice (we have a hotel room in Williams). We a a chihuahua with us and just want to be able to drive to the edge and look around, no tours..etc. Is there a spot to do that?
We need to look and continue our trip since we are on a time schudule this time and do no want to leave the dog in a car or a kennel… Can you help us?
Thanks for the help….
Hi, Cori. Of course! There are many places along the South Rim to park and walk up with your dog on a leash, look over the edge and take photos. Dogs are welcome at the South Rim as long as they are on a leash or in a carrier, and remain outdoors and up on the Rim. Dogs are not allowed below the Rim on the trails, but it doesn’t sound like that is part of your plan, anyway. So carry on! Have fun with your two and four-legged little ones!
Thank you so much for your quick response…
Now I can start planning our trip, including the Grand Canyon.
Thanks again….
