Following an arduous hiking and rafting adventure in the Grand Canyon, a group of people with developmental and physical disabilities are hoping film of their triumph will educate the nation.

A Public Broadcasting Service documentary titled “Right to Risk” chronicles the group’s 15-day, 220-mile journey. The documentary opens in eight major cities, including Phoenix, on Wednesday and hits theaters nationwide Nov. 1.

The documentary exposes one of the greatest accomplishments in recreational activities for people with disabilities.

Teresa Parker, who has spina bifida, is one of the eight people featured in the film.

In one scene, she trudges along a rocky path using crutches. The others are dozens of yards ahead of her.

When she finishes the hike, Parker’s eyes well up. Her fellow hikers cheer for her as she wills her final steps.

“They weren’t clapping because the disabled girl finally made it,” she said. “They were clapping because I made it,” she said. “I have a right to push myself and feel good when I cross the finish line just as anybody else.”
